International Wine Challenge 2008 - Commended

2005 VINTAGE

PRODUCTION:  Produced from 5-20 old vines, planted on the slopes of the coastal ranges of the Maule Valley, with a Mediterranean climate. The grapes were destemmed and whole bunch pressed. Fermentation in stainless steel, with prefermentation maceration followed by fermentation on skins at 24 – 26ºC using selected yeast. 100% malolactic fermentation. Oaked characteristics achieved through cherry wood innerstave and some oak chips. Light gelatine fining.

WINEMAKERS TASTING NOTE: Brilliant red in colour with a violet edge. On the nose the wine presents intense aromas of red fruits, plums and blackberries with a spicy note of black pepper. On the palate, the wine is full bodied with sweet, gripping tannins supported by the rich berry fruit and cassis persistence.

PRESS COMMENTS: Lovely minty edge to the aroma – cherry (perhaps from the use of cherry wood staves imported fro France).  Lovely tight structure and a nuance of sweet, ripe fruit.  Lovely.  (spittoon.biz)

A beautifully structured red wine … to almost everyone’s surprise, the underpriced red won a gold medal at the 2006 International Wine Challenge, the wine world’s biggest blind tasting.  If all Fairtrade wines tasted this good, sales would double overnight.  (Tim Atkin – The Observer, June 18th 2006)
