| Peter Mackey –
Winemaking Consultant Peter was originally introduced to winemaking by his father who was a cooper at Montana Wines in Gisborne, New Zealand. After finishing high school and a few years trying out various jobs he decided to work in the wine industry, starting out at Montana Wines as a cellar hand and quickly working his way up to Cellar Master – a position he held for 6 years. After then he went on to combine his two greatest passions, travel and wine, and soon found himself at the Eola Hills Winery in Oregon, Washington State, USA. After 18 months with the winery, making premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, he went to France for a harvest working in the Languedoc, and Pouilly-Fumé with leading producer Didier Dagueneau. At the end of the northern harvest, Peter travelled south to South Africa to work as the assistant winemaker at Mulderbosch Winery in Stellenbosch. The following three years were spent between the northern and southern hemispheres – working in Argentina (Mendoza), the UK, Armagnac, Minervois and Chile. After the 2000 harvest in Chile, Peter was offered permanent work at the winery where he had been working. The Donoso family were interested in producing a top class Carmenere from the Apalta Valley. He returned to Chile in January 2001 and worked at Viña Apaltagua until September 2004. During this time, his wife had been developing a winemaking consulting company which Peter then joined and together they have created Southern Cross Wine Services. He now consults to a number of wineries the length of Chile, including COVICA. |
